A long time ago, when Grey’s Anatomy was still young and Hannibal was but a glimmer in Bryan Fuller’s eye, I had a blog called Boring Future Generations.
It was, as you might have guessed from that first line, about TV. Specifically, about TV writing. My wife and I were both living in L.A., working in entertainment jobs and as writing partners.
Between taking notes at meetings, I would work on our scripts. Between working on our scripts, I would work on my blog.
As blogs go, it was fine. A lot of giddy nerdery about things I liked and complaining about things I didn’t, all while connecting with other wannabe writers who were also blogging about TV and film writing. Oh, and breaking down scripts. SO much breaking down scripts. Dividing scenes into A, B, and C stories and really diving into the nuts and bolts of structure.
Where is all of this going?
I don’t know! Hey, I didn’t say I was GOOD at structure! Why do you think I was studying it so hard?
Anyway, that’s where the name for this blog comes from.
Maybe I just have a soft spot for it, but I still really like it, and I couldn’t let it die.
And I actually think it kind of works better for what I’m writing now.
Because over the past few years, I’ve rediscovered a love of kidlit as my own kids have reached the age to enjoy it, and that’s where my focus is. Specifically middle grade (even more specifically sci-fi/fantasy/horror stuff)… though I’m confident there will be forays into YA and adult as well.
So I’ll be boring (wait for it) future generations! Get it? Because kids are like… you know… that?
Well, whatever, I still like it.
Now to figure out exactly what this blog is going to be….
